Speed dating is a formalised dating service designed to help singles meet a large number of other singles quickly and easily. Speed dating is designed to save time, remove inhibition and ensure singles meet other singles.

Speed Dating - Format

A normal speed dating event will consist of singles at the speed dating event spending several minutes talking to each other and at the end of the allotted time they are forced to move on to the next single, no matter how much they enjoyed that persons company. At the end of the speed dating event everyone submits a list of singles they liked and the organisers pass on the contact details of the matches to both parties.

Speed Dating - Concept

The concept of speed dating is based on the assumption that people generally decided very quickly on whether they feel romantically compatible with another person. Speed dating also relies on the premise that people's first impressions about someone are permanent.

Speed Dating - History

Speed dating was believed to have been created by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo of Aish HaTorah in late 1998. The first speed dating event was held by Rabbi Deyo at Pete's Café in Beverly Hills, California, USA. Rabbi Deyo's idea for speed dating was to help Jewish singles met other Jewish singles in large communities where they were outnumbered by non-Jews. There are now hundreds of speed dating events of all different types in the UK everyday and thousands around the world.

Speed Dating - Types of events

There are many different types of speed dating events from all ages, mixed sex speed dating events to more specialised niche events such as gay speed dating, graduate speed dating, book lovers speed dating, ethnic speed dating and religious speed dating.

Speed Dating - Advantages

Speed dating is touted as having many advantages over other forms of dating. Speed dating helps you meet large numbers of similar singles very quickly and levels the playing field as everyone is in the same situation. Speed dating helps initiate the interaction between singles, many of which might not normally mix. The speed dating time limit ensures that nobody gets stuck with someone they do not like for too long. The speed dating match process is designed to ensure that no one faces rejection in person. Speed dating matches are not given contact details until after the event. Speed dating also ensures that participants are almost guaranteed to meet people who are single and looking for love.

Speed Dating - Studies

In 2005 a speed dating study by the University of Pennsylvania showed that first impressions are very important at speed dating events. The speed dating study found that people's impressions were formed within the first three seconds of meeting. The speed dating study also found that religion, previous marriages and smoking habits did not play as much of a role as expected. In 2006 a speed dating study in Edinburgh, Scotland, found that 45% of women and 22% of men at speed dating events made a decision about the other person within 30 seconds of meeting. The Scottish speed dating study also found that women were nearly twice as picky as men when it came to selecting people they would like to meet again.
